Enabling hospitals to visualise the locations of all medical devices fitted with passive RFID tags on a map

RFiD Discovery, a leading provider of innovative tracking solutions for healthcare and other industries, has announced the launch of new mapping functionality for its passive RFID asset tracking system. This pioneering feature allows hospitals to visualise the locations of passively tracked assets on an interactive map, improving operational efficiency and patient care.

RFiD Discovery passive mapping function for healthcare tracking medical assets

By displaying this information in a map view rather than a traditional list view, hospitals can quickly identify the area where an asset is located, significantly improving asset management and reducing the time spent searching for critical equipment. Depending on the reader infrastructure in place, this can show assets in real-time or based on last-seen location.

The new feature builds on existing mapping functionality already available for RFiD Discovery’s Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and GPS tracking solutions, which show real-time locations of key assets to an accuracy of up to two metres on a map view.

Making this functionality available for assets tracked with passive RFID tags, which typically cost far less than battery-powered (active) BLE or GPS tags, means that it can be used on a much wider range of equipment.

Simon Dawkins, lead RFID consultant at RFiD Discovery explains:

“By providing a visual representation of asset locations for passively tracked equipment, we are empowering clinical staff to locate a wider range of assets quickly to ensure equipment is always available when needed. Due to the higher cost of tags, hospitals typically only track between a few hundred and a few thousand assets with BLE or other active tracking technologies. Low-cost passive RFID labels, however, allow for all medical assets to be tagged, which for typical acute hospitals can be tens of thousands of items.

"That’s why our passive RFID mapping feature is set to change the way healthcare facilities manage their assets."

Key features of the new mapping functionality include

  • Location tracking: View the location of assets within the hospital, ensuring clinical staff have quick access to all tagged equipment even for tens of thousands of items.
  • Zone-based viewing: Easily identify which assets are located in specific areas, helping clinical engineering teams to locate items due for repair or maintenance.
  • User-friendly interface: Intuitive map interface that simplifies asset management and enhances the user experience.
  • Advanced reporting: View historic asset locations on a map view for informed decision making and strategic planning.

This new release comes at a crucial time as healthcare facilities face increasing demands for efficiency improvements. By implementing this new mapping functionality, hospitals can not only streamline operations, but also improve the overall quality of patient care.
