Harland Simon are pleased to announce that they have successfully gained Industry Partner status with GS1 UK, the not-for-profit standards and solutions organisation. To become a certified Industry partner, Harland Simon has had to demonstrate a high level of knowledge and understanding of GS1 standards.
GS1 UK, in addition to controlling the standards for bar codes which are typically used in retail, also supports healthcare providers and suppliers with an open standard for the use of RFID technology. This is done using the EPCglobal standard which enables cross system data exchange, and allows for information to be shared within an organisation or between different organisations whether it is on a local or even a world-wide basis.
“The GS1 standard represents a stamp of approval which many of our customers now look for,” said Andy James, Sales Manager for RFID Discovery Healthcare solutions at Harland Simon. “The GS1 standard has become mandatory within the Department of Health eProcurement strategy and we are working closely with GS1 UK to ensure our customers can comply with the new regulations.”
Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is used in healthcare environments in order to provide improved patient safety, greater regulatory compliance and to drive operational efficiencies. RFID can provide a cost-effective solution to automatically identify and locate assets or stock items. In hospitals passive RFID labels can significantly reduce the time spent on checking inventory and locating specific equipment. It can improve inventory management, medical device availability and enable medical staff to spend more time looking after patients. Passive ultra-high frequency (UHF) RFID labels can be used to replace the standard asset labels on medical devices and display all relevant information in line with GS1 compliance.
